A Glimpse Into Allied Health: A Week with Ayva at Ararat Physio & Co

From the 24th to the 28th of June, Ararat Physio & Co were lucky enough to have Ayva here completing her work experience. Ayva’s dedication, commitment and passion towards allied health was extremely evident, and we cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her. As a part of her work experience week, Ayva wrote her very own blog, sharing with us why she wants to be a Physio and what she got up to in her week with us. Thank you so much Ayva!!

Why do you want to be a Physio?

I find Physio really interesting because of the way you can work with clients to improve and even fix their injuries, helping people feel better. Another reason I want to become a Physio is because of the way you get to understand the human body, how it works and what it does.

Why did you choose to do work experience at Ararat Physio & Co?

I chose to do work experience at Ararat Physio because after I finish school, I would love to become a Physio, and I thought it would be a good to get an insight into what Physiotherapists actually do. About a year ago, I ruptured a ligament in my ankle while playing netball. Before I new it, I was booked in at Ararat Physio for an appointment with Vincent with the goal of building my strength back up so I could get back out on the court. The Ararat Physio & Co team were really welcoming and friendly, and very supportive in my recovery, making the choice to come here for work experience even easier.

What have you learned and done during your week here?

Monday: I had a tour of the practice and clinical areas, I was shown where everyone worked and what the different rooms and areas are used for. After that, I was able to sit in and listen to four appointment sessions with Vince, learning about different client cases and the different treatments they are offered. After lunch I joined the Supremos Class with Lisa which was really fun and interesting seeing all the different exercises they did.

Tuesday: Today I got to sit in and participant in a lot of different classes that Ararat Physio offers such as their Clinical Exercises Classes, Pilates Circuit Classes and Tai Chi. After this I then got to sit in with Wian for a few of his sessions, and it was very interesting to see how different clinicians work with their different clients and cases.

Wednesday: What a fun day today was! In the morning I went to the pool and assisted in the Hydro classes with Abbie. These Hydro Sessions are one on one based with Abbie, assisting clients who might find exercising outside the pool a bit tricky. It was a very interesting form of Physiotherapy Treatment that I didn’t necessarily know a lot about. After Hydro, I came back to the clinic and sat at the front desk, I learnt what happens out in reception and was able to complete some of my extra tasks as well.

Thursday: I was with Lisa all day, we went back into the gym and I assisted with some more Clinical Exercise Classes, and then went and joined in with the Balance Class also. Lisa and I then went to U3A and did a Tai Chi class. After lunch I assisted with the NDIS Group Class, helping them through their exercises and learning about their different injuries and how we can support them.

Friday: This morning I was back in the gym again for some more Clinical Exercise Classes with Jess. I have definitely learnt so much being in the Clinic Gym and how important exercise is for the rehab and recovery process for injuries, as well as the important role exercise plays in looking after our physical and mental health. To finish off my week, I got to sit in for some appointments with Jane who is the Podiatrist at Ararat Physio & Co. It was really interesting to see another area of allied health and to learn how all areas interrelate and cross over within the health field.

Overall I really enjoyed my week of work experience at Ararat Physio & Co, learning about all things Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology and Podiatry. The team were really welcoming and supportive. Thank you so much for having me!!
